BC Housing Action Coalition

Safe, dignified, low-cost
and affordable housing for all

Our Priorities

Housing as a Basic Right

Housing is a basic human need, not a commodity for profit. We believe safe, affordable housing should be accessible to all, especially those marginalized by the market-driven system. Expanding public housing ensures low-income individuals aren’t subject to market forces. We call for policies that maintain affordability and protect housing as a shared resource, fostering communities rooted in solidarity, not exploitation.

Municipal Land Banks and Community Land Trusts

We advocate for Municipal Land Banks to use public land for social housing, schools, and parks, ensuring long-term affordability without major new investments. We also support Community Land Trusts, empowering communities to own, manage, and preserve affordable housing for low-income residents.

Support and Empower Tenant Organizations

We advocate for legal protections that allow tenants to organize, form unions, and collectively bargain without fear of retaliation. These protections prevent unjust evictions and strengthen tenants’ ability to secure fair leases. We also support funding for tenant-led initiatives, helping renters build unions to improve living conditions, fight gentrification, and stop displacement. Empowered tenants can push back against threats to affordable housing.

Comprehensive Eviction Protections

We support a moratorium on evictions and rent increases, including renovictions, to keep tenants stable. Landlords should need approval and a homeless prevention plan before evicting tenants from social housing. Tenants must receive fair compensation and the right to return at the same rent during renovations. We call for stronger protections against unlawful evictions, with automatic hearings, fair compensation, and harsher penalties for violations.

Comprehensive Support for Vulnerable Populations

We advocate for stronger housing protections for those with mental health and substance use challenges, removing barriers to their rights. We reject punitive housing models, favoring person-centered approaches that respect dignity. We support plans to prevent homelessness during transitions from hospitals, jails, and care systems. Reinforcing Housing First principles is key, prioritizing permanent housing with ongoing support to ensure stability.

Legalize and Support Tent Cities

We advocate for legalizing and supporting tent cities and mobile home encampments as immediate housing solutions for the unhoused. Residents must have access to essential services like water and sanitation, and enforcement actions against them must stop. Where shelter is unavailable, we call for legal camping areas and ongoing support to improve living conditions and protect their rights.
